Major Distinctives

• The German school system is very rigid.

• It is not up to the students to select courses to collect points. There is a strict curriculum which everybody has to attend. In addition there are some freely selectable courses.

• Only in main University can students select courses.

• Basically no extracurricular activities are available from the schools on a regular basis.

• School is from early morning till about 2 o’clock; pupils go home and have to do extensive homework.

Languages

• The first compulsory foreign language is introduced in grade 5, usually English, French, or Latin.

• In Gymnasium a second language is introduced in grade 7

• Starting in grade 9, students have the option of learning a third foreign language.

Teaching Material

Deutsche Fernschule courses are mainly booked by German-speaking families (German, Austrian, and Swiss) living abroad. These can equally include employees of larger corporations, missionaries, development aid workers and members of the diplomatic corps.
